Organ Donation: An Inspiring Story within DPA

Right now more than 80 Alaskans are waiting for a second chance at life. Their names are on a closely monitored list. While their ailments may be different, their hope is the same, that they will live long enough to recieve an organ donation and a fighting chance at survival. In a special health report, we bring you the story of two Anchorage residents whose fates collided changing both of their lives forever.

IRS, AARP seek volunteers

The Internal Revenue Service and AARP are seeking volunteers to provide free tax assistance in Anchorage and Mat-Su during the tax-filing season. The volunteers prepare federal and state returns for the elderly, disabled, non-English speaking and those with limited incomes.

"No tax or accounting experience is needed, only a desire to help others," said Judy Monahan, IRS spokeswoman. Besides people to prepare returns, they need site assistants, who greet taxpayers and make sure their paperwork is complete, among other tasks.

SeniorCare: a new array of services for Alaska seniors

Prescription drug benefit, new services, better access to health care, information & resources to be offered

Juneau, Alaska – Governor Frank H. Murkowski today announced SeniorCare, a new proposed program to make prescription drugs more affordable for Alaska seniors. “SeniorCare will provide qualified seniors with a prescription drug benefit to assist in the purchase of needed medications,” Governor Murkowski said. SeniorCare will also include a new Senior Information Office and a Preferred Drug List to make prescription drugs more affordable. Seniors receiving the Alaska Senior Assistance Program can choose to continue receiving the cash assistance of $120 a month instead of the drug coverage.

HHS Announces Decline in TANF Caseloads

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 -- HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced today that the number of families and individuals receiving assistance under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program declined slightly between March and June 2003.

There were 2,032,157 families receiving TANF cash benefits in June 2003, the most recent month for which data are available. The total represents a 0.3 percent decrease from March 2003 and a 54 percent decrease from August 1996, when TANF was enacted. A total of 4,955,479 individuals were receiving TANF benefits in June 2003, 0.6 percent fewer than in March and 60 percent fewer than in August 1996.

Wash. Times: Compliance rate for child support improves

Almost half of custodial parents received full child-support payments in 2001, a better trend toward compliance than has been recorded since the mid-1990s, the Census Bureau said in a report released yesterday.

About 45 percent of custodial parents received all the child-support payments they were due, with $5,800 the average annual amount paid, said Census Bureau analyst Timothy S. Grall.

Governor Launches Alaska Hire, Sets 90% Goal

(Anchorage) - The Murkowski administration this week launched a major employment program keyed to "good jobs for Alaskans" with a target goal of 90 percent or higher hire in the state's major economic categories.

In remarks Thursday, November 13 in Anchorage, Governor Frank H. Murkowski said the initiative goal is resident hire rates of 90 percent or higher in construction, oil and gas, mining, seafood and forest products and tourism, as well as state and federal government.

The Human Resource Integration has transpired. The Department of Health and Social Services has a Management Consultant Services Team and a Technical Services Center assigned to the department. The Juneau offices are located on the 1st floor of the Alaska Office Building, the Anchorage Technical Service Center is located on the 5th floor of the Frontier Building, and the Anchorage Management Consultant Services Team will be located in the Atwood Building the week of November 10th. Attached a list of employees and the functions they perform, in order to assist you in finding the service that you need. There will be changes as the integration is further defined; we appreciate you working with us as these changes occur.
