Job Start Expanded to Private Not-for-Profit Employers

As field offices roll out the Job Start program, new features are being identified that make the program more beneficial to clients and more useful to employers. The development of Job Start is intended to be fluid, with program improvements being encouraged and instituted rapidly as they are recognized.

Job Start is expanded to include private, not-for-profit organizations as eligible employers.

Not-for-profit organizations (NPOs) make up a large segment of the employers in Alaska. In addition, many are located in areas of the State where there are few private sector employers. NPOs provide many important services to the citizens of Alaska, and often are working in conjunction with DPA to assist families to achieve self-sufficiency. Frequently, NPOs must struggle to find funding to operate their programs, so being able to access Job Start wage subsidies will help them carry out their valuable work.

For clients, this enhancement will increase the number of employers that can use Job Start and thus greatly expand the number of potential employment opportunities. Also, the work environment at an NPO can be more nurturing and family-friendly than a job at a private-sector employer.

This change is effective immediately and is being incorporated into the Job Start manual. Questions on the Job Start program should be addressed to Edward Musslewhite at or (907) 465-5838.
