1027-6 INITIATING NJD
The introductory meeting:
The JD is responsible for carrying out introductory meetings concurrently with potential employers, rather than pursuing one at a time. This increases the likelihood of successful negotiation. These meetings are generally of a formal nature for the purpose of presenting the process of NJD .
Prepare for the formal introductory meeting:
The initial employer meeting sets the tone for communication between the JD and the employer representative. Preparation is a critical piece to successful job negotiation.
Review the job seeker’s Portfolio:
The JD reviews the job seeker’s Portfolio to ensure it is an adequate representation to each employer approached. If revisions are necessary, the JD meets with the Discovery Specialist and the job seeker to ensure accuracy of each Portfolio. Complete a color-printed version of the agreed upon Portfolio specific to each employer (this will likely occur as needed and not in a single meeting). Compile Portfolio into a presentation folder.
Review the Employer Orientation presentation:
The JD reviews study materials including the presentation on NJD (see Employer Orientation and Employer Orientation Study Guide).
Compile a folder for the employer:
The JD compiles a folder to leave with the employer that includes the following:
JD’s Business Card
Copy of the Employer Orientation (not including talking point pages)
A blank copy of “Employer Needs”
Copy of the job seeker’s full Portfolio or at minimum, “Task” page of the Portfolio (if presented at first meeting)
Carry out introductory meeting with employers:
The initial introductory meeting between the JD and potential employer is an opportunity to acquaint and orient the employer with the approach of job negotiation and to discuss the potential for a follow-up meeting (the business needs assessment).
The JD introduces self as an employment representative for the job seeker.
He/she presents the Employer Orientation. Respect the time originally agreed to when the meeting was scheduled.
If time allows, present a copy of the Portfolio either in brief (highlights), or in full. If it seems that the employer has difficulty understanding or acknowledging any need, then it may behoove the JD to present the entire Portfolio. The Portfolio may serve to guide the employer’s thought process toward how the job seeker’s contributions may match a potential need in the job setting.
Review and summarize any notes taken during the presentation(s) to check for accuracy of understanding with the employer.
Provide the employer with a folder of information to leave behind. Review (for clarity) any materials in the folder as necessary or appropriate.
Request or schedule a follow-up meeting with the employer to further assess whether negotiated employment is possible (i.e., a business needs assessment). Explain the purpose of the meeting, length of time required (target 45 min.), and the personnel requested to interview as part of the assessment process.
Confirm the meeting with the employer, following IV, A, 2d.
Note:
Document the introductory meeting in the NJD
Contact Log. In addition, document in CMS .
Briefly note activities that were carried out, and plan for follow-up.
