127-5          CHILD NEEDS TRANSPORTATION TO AN IN-STATE TREATMENT FACILITY

There are two instances when a child may need transportation assistance:

  1. To come from their home community to Anchorage for admission to North Star Behavioral or similar treatment institutions.

  1. To travel from North Star (or a similar institution) to a residential treatment center.

  1. Complete a DKC eligibility determination using the parental income, if the child is eligible for DKC using parental income.  Authorize DKC and this will allow coverage for travel.

  1. If the child is not eligible for DKC using parental income, issue a DE 25 coupon; this coupon will be restricted for the travel expenses.

  1. Pend the DKC case for the MED 18 and send the parent(s) the TEFRA Medicaid packet.  Allow standard pend periods to return the TEFRA Medicaid packet.

  1. If after 30 days waiting period the child has been out of the home for 30 continuous days, the child is considered living separately from their parent(s) and the caseworker may authorize a child only DKC case.

If the child returns home prior to the end of the 30 day waiting period and the parents have returned the completed TEFRA Medicaid packet, forward the TEFRA Medicaid packet and follow-up with an email to the caseworker at the Long Term Care/TEFRA Unit in the Coastal Region.

If the parent does not return the completed TEFRA packet, deny the DKC case and send the TEFRA Referral notice, D002, as a reminder.  The parents can choose to pursue TEFRA later if they need it .
