127-1          SCREENING FOR MEDICAID ELIGIBILITY

When a Medicaid application is received in a DPA District Office caseworkers should take the following steps:

      1. Begin screening by looking for eligibility with the broadest category of Medicaid.  This is usually Family Medicaid, so look for any dependent children in the household

      2. If the household is eligible for Family Medicaid, open a Family Medicaid case.

      3. If there is no Family Medicaid eligibility, but there are children who are potentially eligible for Denali KidCare, the DPA caseworker will:

        1. Determine Denali KidCare eligibility for the children.

        2. If the household has other open programs, the Denali KidCare case will remain carc’d with these programs. If there are no other open programs, the stand-alone Denali KidCare case will be transferred to the Denali KidCare office. Refer to MS 101-5D(5) for additional information.

      1. If there are other household members not eligible for Family Medicaid or Denali KidCare, the caseworker will screen for possible Medicaid coverage such as Under 21 Medicaid, CAMA , or APA -Related Medicaid.

If dual eligibility exists between different Medicaid categories, clients can chose which type of Medicaid they wish to receive.  Benefits and limitations of each program should be explained to the client so an informed decision can be made.
